Civics Education

English As Second Language (ESL) students are a growing part of the student population at SCOLA, and currently 85% of students are receiving ESL instruction through open entry classes and one-on-one or small group tutoring. SCOLA provides specialized classes in citizenship test preparation, but has integrated civics instruction in all classes. The specialized classes are designed to help students preparing for citizenship and focus on vocabulary, speaking and writing skills, and civic knowledge required on the citizenship test. This class is open to students at all levels of test preparation.
SCOLA holds an International Dinner each year for SCOLA students – both ESL and literacy – to share traditional foods from their country with other students, tutors, staff, and board members. This event also serves as a recognition dinner for students who have attained citizenship during the preceding year. The new students receive flags and certificates acknowledging their achievement.
