Language Partnership

The United Neighborhood Centers Language Partnership started in May 2010 as a way to help new immigrants and residents of South Side Scranton develop the working relationships needed to become productive participants in that neighborhood’s revitalization. In Language Partnership, English speakers who want to learn Spanish and Spanish speakers who want to learn English come together and teach each other a second language in a non-judgmental environment. It is an opportunity for members of the community not only to teach each other language skills but also to socialize and build relationships of mutual respect, understanding and support with individuals they would otherwise not have had the chance to get to know.
Language Partnership sessions are free and open to everyone. Participants may start the sessions at anytime.

Many of the Language Partnership participants have already joined together in other Elm Street activities and have met outside of class to work together. For example, they have helped each other with yard work, filling out paperwork, and working with computers. One English-speaking partner helped a Spanish-speaking partner learn how to make a traditional apple pie. Another partner drove her new friend to Philadelphia to conduct business at the Mexican Consulate. We hope that as the Language Partnership develops, more participants will become involved in helping the revitalization team and each other restore neighborhood pride and identity to South Side.
