Project Hope at Camp St. Andrew
United Neighborhood Centers' Project Hope Summer Day Camp, located at Camp St. Andrew in the Endless Mountain of Tunkhannock, PA, has served the needs of more than 500 low-income children from Lackawanna County each year for over 38 years.
Since 1970 United Neighborhood Centers has been offering this unique summer experience for at-risk children living in our community through a collaboration with the Diocese of Scranton.
With a lack of urban recreation programs for these children, Project Hope offers an alternative to the hot city streets and housing projects. On a 500+ acre country setting, in a structured wholesome environment, children learn to swim, boat, canoe, fish, camp and take part in organized activities that include music, arts and crafts, nature studies and sports.
In addition Lackawanna County Drug and Alcohol Program and the Lackawanna County Safety Program offer programs for campers and the Scranton Police Department has become a regular provider of programs to these children building positive relationships that last throughout the year.
At camp the children are served a morning breakfast, a hot, well-balanced noontime meal, and a nutritious snack before they go home. The program
ensures that the nutritional health of these children is addressed during the summer months.
