UNC to begin housing program for homeless families with new grant

UNC was recently awarded a grant of $216,269 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to begin a permanent supportive housing program for homeless families in Lackawanna County. UNC was one of 40 organizations in Pennsylvania selected to receive funding for new programming in 2012. According to the latest Point in Time survey of homelessness in Lackawanna County, families make up 45% of the total homeless population.

This new initiative will help fight the steady increase of homeless families. It will join UNC’s five other current supportive housing programs, as well as the Scranton/Lackawanna County Continuum of Care (CoC). The CoC is a collaboration to end homelessness that is administered by seven local non-profit agencies.

The grant will be used to provide a permanent place of residence, case management and additional essential services to eight chronically homeless families throughout the county. UNC’s new program is the first to offer permanent supportive housing to homeless families in Lackawanna County.
