The agency’s purpose is to meet the needs of local low-income families, seniors, youth, and new immigrants, while also empowering them to attain self-sufficiency. UNC’s wide array of programs are continuously adjusted to fill the gaps that exist in local services.

UNC services include child care centers with transportation, pre-school programs, youth programs, older adult programs, community health education, free screenings, community services, community education (free adult literacy, English as a Second Language, and citizenship classes), community revitalization, and community development (affordable housing).

Our UNC Locations: Scranton, Tunkhannock, Jessup, Carbondale, West Pittston. This position is located in Scranton, PA.

Hours: Full-time hours Monday through Friday 9:00am to 5:00pm.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Financial Officer will play a key role in overseeing the financial health of the organization, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, providing strategic financial guidance, and spearheading efforts to automate processes and enhance workflow efficiency.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in finance, at least 8 years of relevant experience, and a proven track record of successful financial management in a nonprofit setting.

Responsibilities:

Financial Leadership:

  • Provide both strategic and operational financial leadership to the agency’s executive team.
  • Develop and implement financial policies, procedures, and systems to ensure effective financial management.
  • Collaborate with other senior leaders to align financial strategies with organizational goals.

Budgeting and Forecasting:

  • Lead the annual budgeting process and provide regular financial forecasts to guide decision-making.
  • Utilize advanced analytics to conduct scenario planning and analysis for accurate budget projections.
  • Implement automation tools to streamline budgeting processes.
  • Monitor budget performance and work with leadership to ensure financial targets are met.

Financial Reporting:

  • Prepare and present timely and accurate financial statements, reports, and analysis to the executive team.
  • Leverage data analytics tools to extract actionable insights from financial data.
  • Implement automated reporting systems to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant accounting standards and regulatory requirements.

Process Automation and Workflow Improvement:

  • Assess current financial processes and workflows to identify areas for improvement.
  • Introduce automation tools to enhance efficiency in routine financial tasks.
  • Spearhead initiatives to streamline financial workflows and reduce manual intervention.
  • Continuously evaluate and implement emerging technologies to optimize financial processes.

Supervision and Team Management:

  • Supervise and mentor a finance team (Controller, Staff Accountant, and Accounting Associate), providing guidance and support in day-to-day operations.
  • Foster a data-driven and automated culture within the finance team.
  • Oversee the recruitment, training, and development of finance staff.

Audit and Compliance:

  • Coordinate and manage the annual audit process and ensure compliance with all relevant regulations.
  • Utilize data analytics to enhance audit efficiency and accuracy.
  • Stay informed about changes in accounting standards and ensure the organization’s financial practices are up-to-date.

Grants and Funding Management:

  • Utilize analytics to assess the financial impact of different funding scenarios.
  • Identify and pursue new funding opportunities using data-driven insights.

Risk Management:

  • Assess and manage financial risks, implementing strategies to mitigate potential challenges.
  • Use analytics to identify and evaluate potential risks, developing proactive measures.
  • Ensure the organization’s financial practices are in compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience/Licensure

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field; MBA or CPA required.
  • Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years of finance experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role.
  • Proficiency with financial-management and accounting software systems and programs is required.
  • Proven experience in financial management within the nonprofit sector.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, budgeting, and financial analysis.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lead and motivate a team, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit financial regulations and compliance.

Compensation Range: $85K to $100K
