UNC Campers Connect with Nature, Creativity, and Sustainability

United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania (UNC) is committed to providing enriching experiences that help young people learn, grow, and discover new interests. This summer, children enrolled in UNC’s summer program participated in the Earth Art Explorers Camp at Spring Hills Farm in Dalton, a unique opportunity that blended environmental education, artistic expression, and hands-on exploration.

Held during two weeklong sessions from August 10-14 and August 17-21, 2026, the camp gave UNC youth the chance to step outside the traditional classroom setting and engaging directly with the natural world. Through interactive activities and guided exploration, campers developed a deeper understanding of the environment while strengthening their creativity, curiosity, and problem-solving skills.

Throughout the program, campers experienced life on a working farm by learning how bees make honey, helping feed chickens and collect eggs, and discovering the responsibilities involved in caring for horses and sheep. They also explored local ecosystems, identifying different trees, plants, and insects while learning how each plays an important role in sustaining healthy habitats.

A key component of the Earth Art Explorers experience was learning about sustainability and environmental stewardship. Campers participated in activities that highlighted the connections between plants, animals, and people, encouraging them to think critically about how individuals can help protect and care for the environment.

Creativity was woven throughout every aspect of the program. Campers created nature-inspired crafts, experimented with leaf rubbings and prints, and completed eco-art projects using materials and inspiration found in the natural world. They also spent time painting the scenic landscape surrounding the farm’s lake, transforming their observations into artistic expression.

The program concluded with a special showcase for families, featuring artwork, sculptures, and collaborative projects created throughout the camp. The event celebrated not only the campers’ creativity but also the knowledge and confidence they gained during their time outdoors.
