Older Adults

UNC offers diverse services to older adults and their families throughout Lackawanna County. With a focus on health, fitness, social and recreational activities, UNC’s Senior Community Centers and services aim to help older adults age well and independently.

In partnership with the Lackawanna County Area Agency on Aging, UNC’s Senior Community Centers offer a variety of in-person activities to promote lifelong learning and wellness as well as grab and go meals.

Most activities do not require reservations, though meals must be reserved in advance. Please call the contact listed below the center you wish to attend or pick up meals from.

To learn more about UNC’s four Senior Community Centers, take a few minutes to watch this video. It showcases the diverse Arts for Life programming available at UNC’s Fallbrook, Hillside, Mid Valley, and Scranton centers and features our Community Health and Aging Director, Sarah Bodnar.

Arts for Life© is a community-driven initiative, supported by the Lackawanna County Area Agency on Aging, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Arts in Education NEPA, the arts education program of the Northeastern Educational IU19, and the Broadway Theatre League of NEPA.

All programming costs are paid through grants from Lackawanna County, the Scranton Area Community Foundation, the Willary Foundation, and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. Posture Interactive produced the video, showcasing the vital role our senior community center plays in this program.

Family Support Network

It can be challenging to care for and monitor a loved one as they age from a distance. We recognize that many seniors—though loved and supported by family members—often live far away from friends and relatives. We want to help those concerned members of the senior’s support network by being local “eyes and ears.” For those family members who need some extra local support for their senior loved one, UNC offers the Family Support Network program. Long-distance family members can request that a health navigator at UNC check-in with their senior living in Lackawanna County, and link them to UNC’s wrap-around services and other community resources. UNC can provide services such as telephone social support, community recreation, mental health assessment and counseling, access to healthy food, access to transportation services, and assistance in securing level-of-care assessments to ensure the senior continues to live safely and independently. To request a check-in, please complete the online form by clicking the button below or call 570-346-6203 ext. 111.
