Steamtown National Historic Site Launches Food Drive

Steamtown National Historic Site is organizing a food drive for Angel’s Attic, the food pantry run by United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern PA.  Beverly Benavidez, ranger at the park, said “the park employees wanted to help out the community”.  This is especially timely because currently, local food banks shelves are nearly bare.

“Most of our food donations come in November and December“, said Michael Hanley, Executive Director of UNC.  “Unfortunately, hunger doesn’t have a season—it is always with us.”  This past year, UNC provided food to over 14,000 separate households.

Steamtown National Historic Site will be running their drive from August 21 through August 27 and again from September 10 through September 24.  Items desired are peanut butter, cereal, canned or frozen fruit, canned or frozen vegetables, canned soup, canned chicken, tuna fish, macaroni & cheese, pasta, beef stew, pasta sauce, and jelly.  In addition, personal hygiene items such as soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shaving cream, toilet paper, deodorant, and diapers are also appreciated.  Barrels for collection will be located throughout the Steamtown park.
