UNC Completes Five Projects During Scranton City Pride

United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania was proud to partner in this year’s Scranton City Pride with Scranton Tomorrow, NeighborWorks Northeastern Pennsylvania, and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful. From May 27 to June 7, 2025, UNC’s Community Revitalization Team completed five impactful neighborhood projects.

In Pine Brook’s Barrett Court, we assisted residents with major brush removal. Special thanks to Martinez Landscaping & Stone for going above and beyond to help transform the space.

We also installed permanent garbage cans along Capouse Avenue, giving residents easier access to proper disposal and helping keep streets cleaner and more welcoming.

In South Scranton, we cleared a vacant lot that had become an illegal dumping site. With help from local residents and the South Scranton Neighborhood Association, five dump trucks of debris were removed.

At Capouse Corner Green, we weeded flower beds and distributed planters to neighbors to promote ongoing beautification.

The annual Garbage Olympics, a two-hour trash collection competition between Pine Brook and West Scranton, resulted in 280 pounds of litter removed in just one afternoon.

Together, these five projects—Brush Removal, Trash Can Installation, Vacant Lot Clean-Up, Garden & Plant Giveaway, and the Garbage Olympics—involved 43 volunteers, 60 volunteer hours, and 25 staff hours. We’re grateful to everyone who helped make our neighborhoods cleaner, safer, and stronger.

UNC’s Pine Brook Revitalization is supported by the PA Department of Community and Economic Development’s Neighborhood Partnership Program, with major funding from Coterra Energy and Peoples Security Bank & Trust. Additional support is provided by the City of Scranton and the DCED Keystone Communities Program.
