Facilities and Grounds Assistant

UNC Locations: Scranton, Tunkhannock, Jessup, Carbondale, West Pittston. This position supports all UNC locations.

Hours: Full-time hours Monday through Friday 8:00am to 4:00pm with availability to participate in rotating team On-Call rotation.

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Maintenance Leadership, the Facilities and Grounds Assistant is responsible for handling preventative maintenance, emergency repairs and maintenance projects throughout UNC & UNCDC. This role directly supports the agency mission by ensuring safe, clean, and welcoming environments for staff, residents, and consumers across all locations. The Facilities and Grounds Assistant must have strong interpersonal skills, including effective verbal and written communication, professionalism, and the ability to interact with staff, clients, and vendors.

Responsibilities:

  • General housekeeping as assigned.
  • Perform basic repairs and installation/upkeep of household fixtures.
  • Maintain building and grounds safety, including snow removal, tree trimming, debris removal (including garbage), handling hazardous materials, and proper disposal of chemicals.
  • Responsible for site groundskeeping, including use of trimmers and mowers.
  • Meet deliveries and escort vendors to appropriate areas for unloading bulk items.
  • Communicate regularly with Maintenance team leadership and participate in meetings to ensure facility readiness for all activities.
  • Interact with residents at program properties, agency staff, and consumers in a professional and respectful manner, requiring strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Check functionality of building systems (e.g., fire alarms, emergency exit lights, elevators).
  • Conduct facility walkthroughs and inspections.
  • Ensure equipment and tools are cleaned, stored properly, and maintain tool inventory.
  • Coverage for schedule/unscheduled time off within the facilities/maintenance team.
  • Available to participate in weekly team on -call rotation.
  • All duties as assigned.

Additional preferred skills:

  • Troubleshooting and repair experience:
    • Basic electrical fixtures and circuits including low voltage electronic, 120/240V.
    • Windows/doors.
    • Lock and entryway experience.
    • Flooring/carpet basic installation.
    • Household plumbing systems and fixtures.
    • HVAC systems-heat pumps, air handlers, gas burners, boilers and associated equipment.
    • Experience in painting, prep, best practices and techniques.
  • Performing preventative maintenance on equipment and facilities/properties.
  • REAC inspections.
  • Overseeing contractors when professional repairs are necessary.
  • Assessing system breakdowns and determining the kind of repairs that are required.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds regularly
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, and climb for extended periods of time
  • Ability to safely use ladders, step stools, and basic maintenance equipment
  • Ability to work with hands and tools for prolonged periods
  • Manual dexterity to operate hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment
  • Ability to reach overhead and work in confined spaces when necessary
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions such as sweeping, mowing, trimming, and basic repairs
  • Visual ability to inspect equipment, buildings, and grounds for safety hazards
  • Ability to respond to emergency maintenance needs as required

Work Environment

  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow
  • Exposure to dust, dirt, noise, and cleaning or maintenance chemicals
  • Regular use of maintenance equipment including mowers, trimmers, hand tools, and power tools
  • Occasional exposure to mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
  • May be required to travel between multiple program locations or properties
  • May be required to work evenings, weekends, or participate in an on-call rotation
  • Work may involve interacting with staff, clients, vendors, and contractors
  • Fast-paced environment with changing priorities and unscheduled maintenance needs

Education/Experience/Licensure:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience and/or knowledge of basic mechanical projects/basic repairs is preferred.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
