English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructor

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Education, the ESL (English as a Second Language) Instructor develops and teaches Family Literacy classes in an ESL-context. The ideal candidate will be passionate about teaching English language learners and supporting family literacy development. This position involves working with caregivers to strengthen their English skills, providing parenting education, and conducting interactive literacy activities with the adults and children.

The ESL Instructor works 40 hours per week; two 12:00-8:00pm days and three 9:00-5:00pm days.

Responsibilities:

  • Becomes trained in the agency’s coaching-oriented approach and the brain science of poverty, including skills for Executive Function and Self-Regulation.
  • Utilizes a strengths-based approach to conduct thorough assessment of participant needs and creates an individualized action plan to remove barriers.
  • Provides crisis prevention and intervention as needed.
  • Collaborates with coaches and educational institution staff to address performance issues, barriers to success, and to celebrate achievements.
  • Assists with the documentation and evaluation efforts of support methods for goal progression.
  • Maintains relationships with community partners and participate in community and agency events for ongoing recruitment efforts.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Strong communication skills (both verbally and in writing), public relations and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach English language learners.
  • Strong organization and time management skills.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to different situations in order to meet the needs of the families.
  • Ability to conceptualize and communicate ideas.
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Computer literate with knowledge of MS Office and other common applications.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.

Education/Experience/Licensure

  • Bachelor degree is required.
  • Experience working with English language learners is preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Office 365 is preferred.
