About Project Hope Day Camp

Since 1970, Project Hope Day Camp has provided children from low-income families in Lackawanna County with a safe, supportive, and enriching environment during the out-of-school summer months. Campers are transported daily to Camp UNC in Tunkhannock, PA, where they participate in a traditional summer camp experience that includes swimming, outdoor recreation, mindfulness practices, arts and crafts, environmental studies, sports, and other structured activities.

Project Hope is committed to providing a safe and positive environment where children can build confidence, develop new skills, and form meaningful relationships.

Position Overview

The Lifeguard plays a critical role in maintaining a safe aquatic environment for campers ages 5–14. This position is responsible for supervising all swimming activities, enforcing pool safety rules, and responding appropriately in emergency situations. Lifeguards work collaboratively with camp staff to ensure that water-based activities are safe, structured, and enjoyable for all participants.

Key Responsibilities

Aquatic Safety & Supervision

  • Monitor campers during all swimming activities
  • Enforce pool safety rules and camp policies
  • Identify and respond quickly and effectively to potential hazards

Emergency Response

  • Provide immediate response in the event of an emergency
  • Administer first aid and CPR as needed
  • Follow all emergency action procedures and reporting protocols

Team Collaboration

  • Communicate effectively with camp leadership and counselors
  • Assist with camper transitions to and from aquatic activities
  • Contribute to a positive and supportive camp environment

Schedule & Time Commitment

  • Camp Dates: Monday–Friday, July 6–31, 2026
  • Camp Hours: Daily hours provided upon hire
  • Mandatory Staff Training: Three training days required: June 22 – 24 2026
  • Transportation: Transportation to and from camp is available from designated meeting points in Scranton
  • Meals: Meals are provided during camp days

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be 16 years of age or older
  • Availability for the full four-week camp session
  • Current Lifeguard Certification (or willingness and ability to obtain certification prior to June 26, 2026)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with children
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification
  • Strong communication and situational awareness skills
  • Multi-language skills encouraged but not required
